  • Seven Days

As I write this it is now almost a calming effect as I know we are seven days from departing Milwaukee to travel to Sault St. Marie, MI to begin the start of another topic journey. (Wow that was a long sentence LOL). I have documented all tools needed, and maintenance checklists to be completed. Miles have been put on the bike (670), and all that remains to be done is pack riding gear and clothes.

The initial pile of spare parts and supplies.
A short demonstration ride at the send off party.
Using my tool checklist to pack appropriately.

I will finish all supplies this next few days, and we will be loading up the awesome Team Effort chase truck this weekend. And we are off on Sept 7.

The send off party blew me away! So many people showed up I was humbled and grateful.

At this point we are past the point of ordering more parts or supplies. Again a calm before the storm kind of feeling.

I want to thank all the great people who have bought a t-shirt or pennant, and have contributed to my CB fund at Nick’s Anvil Inn. I am ever thankful for the support.

Thanks for following. More to come!

  • 10 days away!

Well, the time is getting near! Lots have been going on and I will be posting more frequently as we prepare for the big event! Here is a great poster showing all the stops.

Hope to see many of you along the route.

I have been documenting every fastener on my 1923 J to only bring the tools we really need. This is one page of a four page document I created. Every night we will be checking these fasteners.

More riding also this past week!

I have 650 miles on the bike and I’m now done accumulating any more. All systems are a go!

The big send off party is tomorrow (Aug 27) at Nick’s Anvil Inn. Hope to see many of you there.

More to come. Thanks for following along.

  • The Miles Continue to Accumulate

It’s been a little while since my last update. Been busy creating a daily maintenance chart for the Cannonball. Like an airline pilot has a checklist before each flight, I will be creating a checklist for each day: fasteners and required maintenance.

Yesterday was a 87 mile ride. The goal was to start with a full gas tank and run the bike until the tank was dry and the bike died. A few pics along the ride. Had friends tag along and we had a blast!

And finally at almost 83 miles the bike died due to all gas in main tank was used up. So now I know my range. Over 40 MPG. Next will be to gauge the reserve tank. So I know I can do over 100 miles between gas fills.

The bike is running excellent. Cannonball is right around the corner. More updates later.

  • More Riding!

I am continuing to ride (and bond) with my 23 J model. At 420 miles so far. Having a great time riding almost every day around town. A good friend put together a poker run to support my Cannonball effort. Here are some shots of the past week riding.

There is still a huge amount of work ahead of me to be ready for the 2021 Cannonball in September. I’ll keep you all updated. Over and out.

  • A great birthday ride

Well today I am another year older and I’d like to think a bit wiser as well! Spent the morning in the shop on a customer bike. But this little beauty was calling my name!

So I wrapped up shop work and Nancy and I went for a nice 50 mile ride for lunch.

Had a nice burger and headed for home. A nice quick ride to get used to the new (to me) machine. Bike is running flawless.

Some stats from the ride to lunch and ride home from lunch.

Nice cruising speed of 45mph. The J is happy there. However knowing 55-65 is also possible is reassuring!

Back home and J is resting for the night.

  • Home sweet home

Well my journey is now complete. My J is back home for some bonding time. Got my seat all situated.

    Also monitoring my oil consumption.

Went out for a short ride and it was miles of smiles! Bike was flawless.

Cruised along at a nice pace. All good!

  • More Miles on the 23 J

Today is the last day at Sagebrush Cycle. It is also the day of their annual run. About 20 riders showed up with their vintage machines. Pans, flatheads, shovels, Nortons, and JDs.

The Norton guys are also Cannonballers so it was great to see them again. After the pre-ride meeting we were off. Slight drizzle most of the day.

The first stop was at the Petrified Wood gas station. Way cool.

My bike is running perfect. Still breaking it in so taking it easy. Running good!

Next stop was a short coffee and pie break. I had the coconut pie and coffee. Excellent.

After the pie time to ride some more and head to lunch at Doc’s in Muenster. What a cool stop. the lunch was excellent!

After this is was a nice 60 mile ride back home. Some gravel, some rain, some sun, and miles of smiles.

Once back at the shop I threw my bike up on the lift to drain and measure the oil as well as a general inspection. 140 miles today. All checked out good.

Nice and dirty from the ride! Perfect.

Had help from Matt and Joe to load the bike in my van for the ride home.

So my TX trip comes to an end with an outstanding experience with Jon Neuman and Matt Rubble of Sagebrush Cycle in Flower Mound, TX.

Next stop home to continue riding and preparing for the Cannonball. Over and out.

  • Another Awesome Day!

Spent today getting more familiar with my new machine. Again went over the entire bike to prepare for a great ride today. Ended up doing 60 miles of flawless riding!

The bike ran great. Plenty of power. Tomorrow will be 150 miles if the weather holds out.

Did my second full service to monitor the oil level and consumption. All good. Over and out.
