  • Engine is “back home”!

Well I have the engine back from my rebuilder. All went smooth. New Hastings rings (2 per groove, three grooves). Piston needs minor machining for new rings. We were able to use original valves and piston. In fact the only new items were rings and gaskets.

And here is a video “tour”.

All going smooth. A lot to do to swap engines. More work and updates to follow.

  • Cylinder Fixture

Completed the fabrication of the cylinder holding fixture. All good!

  • Leather Lagging

Getting the front pulley all set with new lagging.

  • Work continues

Making new gaskets for the cylinder and ignition assembly.

Tooling up a fixture to hold the cylinder for valve work.

Slow and steady progress. Still on track.

  • Engine Work Continues

Cases and flywheels all cleaned up, flywheels trued, and ready for assembly.

    Priming rod assembly.

    Using V-Rod case sealant

    Checking end play. All good!

    Cylinder work next. All good!

  • Hard at work

Several shots taken by a visitor this weekend.

  • Bars on, belt off.

Finished installing fork stem hardware and handlebars. Hooked up all linkage again.

After an old belt was donated to my project, I cut and glued to size. Belt will be sent as a sample for a new one to be made.

Then install new leather lagging to front pulley later this week.

Slow and steady progress. Thanks for all the support and encouragement.

  • Neck Bearings and Rear Brake

Last night was a good night. Received the original fork neck bearings cups and races back from the machine shop. The shop “skimmed” the ball bearing surfaces back to a mirror smooth finish. The races had pitted from sitting for 65+ years with the old ball bearings.

So new ball bearings were installed along with a nice coating of grease.

Then the top adjusting cone was installed and tightened down.

The front wheel was put back on after this. There should be no reason the front end has to come off in the future.

Now moving to the rear brake. After initial rear hub rebuild, as I was getting the bike ready for three shows, I most likely did not fully understand the workings of the Muscleman rear brake. After I initially installed a few months ago I had a rear brake, however “lost it” after a few tries. So last night we pulled the rear wheel off and disassembled the hub. All looked good. This time we “set” the chain sprocket a bit different. Difficult to explain but the sprocket has a wide threaded portion that goes into a mechanism to activate the brake when the pedals are rotated in a backwards manner. Anyway after reassembly the wheel was installed back in the bike and chain adjusted. Rear brake now operates AOK!

Next will be getting a new belt. I’ll leave that story for the next post.

  • Flywheels

I know I’ve been pretty quiet lately, but that does not mean no work is getting done. Here are the flywheels from spare engine 1. In spec and ready to be installed back to the crankcase.

Piston is complete with new made to order Hastings rings. Cylinder and valves next.
